1 Thessalonians 5:12

Respect

Respect. 1st Thessalonians 5:12 In a sincere appeal to God's people, whom he considers equals within the same family, Paul encourages the believers in Thessalonica to recognize and value the efforts of some members of the assembly. Those "among you" might include individuals like Phoebe of Cenchrea, Dorcas of Joppa, and Aquila and Priscilla, who were known for their dedication and efforts to serve the Lord's people. Such individuals among us deserve our respect and gratitude.

Some are "over" us because they have been raised up from among us by the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us. Church government is to be recognized, and their spiritual concern establishes their designated authority. Their position of headship in the local congregation comes from the Lord. Spiritual maturity and wisdom are clear evidence of their right to admonish us by guiding us with what is right according to scripture.

Respect for the elders in an assembly and peace among the believers are two signs of a healthy congregation. Sometimes, a word of admonition or warning needs to be shared from the scriptures that relate to the saints. The way an elder with a shepherd’s heart delivers this can influence how the admonition is accepted.

The Holy Spirit designates those whom God chooses to lead His people. Qualifications are specified in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1, which highlight the leadership qualities God intends assembly leaders to possess. Some flexibility may be allowed if a person is out of character for a brief period, but these are divine qualifications. A brother's desire to care for the Lord’s people is evidence of a shepherd’s heart and a willingness to do the work of an overseer, not merely hold a leadership position. The Lord’s people will recognize who is qualified, pray for them, and submit to their leadership.
