Listening & Learning — A Devotional

1 Thessalonians 5:20

Despise Not

Despise Not. 1st Thessalonians 5:20 Before the days of the written New Testament, the Lord provided prophets to communicate His truth to His people. Apostles and prophets were the foundation of the church. Some Judaizers or their followers might have looked down on those prophets because their "prophesying" was not what they wanted to hear.

Our attitude when listening to a speaker influences us and possibly others, either positively or negatively. True neutrality is difficult to maintain during teaching. We tend to accept what is said as truth and then decide whether to believe and act on it, or reject it because it conflicts with our own sense of right or what we want to hear. These attitudes are often shaped by our impression of the speaker. It’s unfair to mock those who disagree and to dismiss their “prophecies” with contempt.
