1 Timothy 1:3–7

ACT NOW

ACT NOW. 1Timothy 1:3-7 An urgent issue arose in Ephesus when some false teachers, driven by their own agenda and self-interest, voiced their personal opinions and expected the saints of that assembly to follow them. False teaching had sparked people's interest in the area, where the Lord's people were told they needed to seek some hidden knowledge that the apostles had not taught, and that angels should be worshipped. Such matters spreading among assemblies in the region can hinder, or even stop, the Gospel's outreach. These myths and the idea of returning to their family trees in the Old Testament for spiritual understanding hinder God's work, both then and now.

Paul warned Timothy about those teaching heresy in the Ephesian church. They spread false doctrine [v.3] and speculative stories based on genealogies [v.4]. They argued [v.4], used useless talk [v.6], and aimed to become teachers of the Old Testament law. They were proud [v.7], teaching “dos and don’ts” [4:3] and claiming they should be paid for teaching because they were religious teachers.

Some saints stumble and are left floundering in doubt because of those who say, "You need something more than faith in Christ alone." When controversies focus on false teachers' opinions, the congregation's interest in God's truth and the Person of our Lord Jesus Christ is sidetracked. People become interested in speculations and then argue over their ideas, effectively stopping the work of the Gospel. The study of the Bible and how to apply its truth to daily life and the work of the Lord in our generation suffers and no longer takes priority in the church when vain speculation takes hold.

Religious speculation and pointless arguments divert time that should be dedicated to the core message of Christianity—the Person and work of our Lord Jesus Christ. Strangely, one foolish question leads to another, and one man's speculation and opinion encourage the same in others. The master deceiver, Satan, has a "hay day" when he can distract God's people from the purpose of the church, which is to bear testimony faithfully to our Lord and promote God's truth. Anything that prevents God's people from fulfilling the commission given to us should be avoided. Have nothing to do with those who shift the focus of the saints away from our Lord Jesus Christ.
