SOUND DOCTRINE

SOUND DOCTRINE. 1 Timothy 1:8-11 The command Paul urged Timothy to pass on was clear teaching rather than speculation that confuses and misleads the people. The command related to "sound doctrine" promotes love, purity of life, and a good conscience guided by the Scriptures, not by men's opinions. The Holy Spirit instructs us and gives us real and lasting faith instead of leaving us condemned, as the law does. Turning away from the command of love as our guiding principle in life leaves us with only words that can lead to misinterpretation of Scripture. The law is good in itself but can be misused.

Those who "want to be teachers of the law" misunderstood the purpose of the law, which is to bring conviction of sin, curb the actions of sinners, and promote what is right. The misuse of the law caused people to become burdened by it, and this was what the false teachers were teaching. The "charge" Timothy was to give them was strict orders from someone superior, like a commanding officer, to stop teaching false doctrine based on their opinion of the law. Their teaching involved using Old Testament laws and genealogies to come up with unusual and new ideas that led people astray by raising questions and not providing clear scriptural answers. Timothy was instructed to stay focused on his work in Ephesus to stop this drift.
