TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES. 2nd Thessalonians 2:8-12 Strangely, many people are drawn to secrets and cannot be satisfied until they discover what has been hidden. The secret of lawlessness, "the mystery of lawlessness," has been known to God but mostly concealed from humans because law has imposed an outward cover of decency and civilized behavior on people. After the rapture of the church, people will learn through bitter experience the alternative to Christ being Lord of all.
The hidden lawlessness will eventually break out without restraint. The unseen force from which sin originates will cause lawlessness and violence worldwide, driven by Satan and the "man of sin (lawlessness)" who is under Satan's control. One of the names of the antichrist is "Wicked." There will be supernatural evil working through him, empowered by Satan. This man will be revealed and suddenly appear on the world stage as an exceedingly powerful figure. The entire world will see him.
The main point of Paul's letter, which should be included in our teaching, is not to provide all kinds of details about this evil man or to try to figure out who he is. He will not be able to stand against the power and authority of the Lord. He will be revealed for who he truly is when the Lord Jesus Christ appears, and our Lord will destroy him. He will be made completely useless and thrown into the lake of fire. God's plans will succeed regardless of how powerful the enemies appear to be.
The Lord's people stand with the Victor, not the defeated. The rapture is what we look forward to, not what happens afterward. These will be difficult days for the persecuted saints God saves during the Tribulation, but our rest is in glory. We don't need to worry about the antichrist. The Lord will handle him with His power and "the brightness of His coming" when He is revealed from heaven and appears in glory.
He will be seen for a while as a champion of world order, but then his evil nature will be revealed. Many will first think he is the true Christ, because he will believe his sinful nature and the sins he commits are hidden from the people's eyes. However, the true character of this evil man will soon be exposed as evil personified and empowered by Satan. Millions of people who believed he was the answer to the world's problems will have to run and hide. He will be exposed as Satan’s tool, manipulated by Satan's relentless enmity against God. His brief moment of infamy will come to an end. His era of destructive leadership will be halted when the Lord returns with righteous judgment. He will descend from heaven, bringing with Him mighty armies of saints and angels, and will put an end to the terrible reign of evil with His almighty power.
The words of the Lord Jesus Christ are all it will take to bring down that wicked man. He will be destroyed quickly and cast into the pit. There will be no doubt, then, for all inhabitants of Earth as to who Jesus is. The breath of His mouth and the words He speaks will once again reveal this to the world. Every person will witness our Lord's previously hidden glory worldwide. The splendor of His revelation will cause many who refused to believe in Him to hide from His face. The multitude of people surrounding Him are those He has saved by His grace. The Almighty King returns to earth to take His place as the supreme Ruler—King of kings and Lord of lords.
For believing saints today, this prophecy should motivate them to reach as many souls as possible before He comes to reign. There will indeed be many saved during the reign of the man of sin, but now we can tell people that heaven’s door is open, and they can enter and be saved from the coming wrath. The troubled saints of Thessalonica had the order of things clarified by these written words of the apostle Paul, and instead of worrying about what was coming and searching for a place to hide, they should all go back to work and live for Christ each day. Like them, we should leave our concerns to God and have faith in what His Word says.
Signs and wonders were used when the Lord was on earth to bless people, get their attention, and point them to God from heaven, who came to earth in the flesh to bless and save the lost. The signs and wonders proved He was God, found in fashion as a man, and could pay sin’s terrible cost. He lamented that men would not believe in Him unless they saw signs and wonders. He did many things while He was here, which caused many to stop and think. However, those acts did not save the souls of those who looked on and could see evidence of God in Jesus. The point was that they would believe Jesus Christ is God the Son.
Counterfeits have used the same tactic to attract followers who chase after them instead of the Savior. The disciples performed wonders in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ after He rose from the dead to confirm the message's truth. The power of the Spirit to perform such acts ended after the scriptures were written because “faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.” There was no need for signs and wonders when we have the written word of God. The lawless one will use demonic powers to lure people to him and, through lying wonders, will deceive them into his sphere of influence. Many will trust him because of these signs and follow him because they are like the blind leading the blind.
The Lord Jesus's miracles and signs had a noble purpose. They were meant to help, heal, and point people to God and the One who saves sinners. This false “Christ” will use satanic power to lead people away from God. We know that such a person is not from the Lord when this occurs. Even today, in a smaller way, there are those trying to attract followers through signs and lying wonders, often by sleight of hand. Through this deception, they increase their wealth and gain followers. The man of sin will do some of the same things we see now.
The man of lawlessness will make evil seem appealing to unbelievers, and they will fall for his deception because they will not receive "the love of the truth." Truth is the message; love embodies Truth, which is our Lord Jesus Christ. To reject His message is to reject Him personally. We need to remember this when we preach the Gospel. God is good, everything He created is good, and His Gospel is good, but sin has corrupted the world, and Satan will try to exploit that through the man of lawlessness.
God has granted mankind the power of choice, and people have, and will continue to, choose lies and evil over righteousness and truth. Deceit is a primary tool Satan uses. They will embrace the lie embodied in the man of lawlessness. God is stronger than evil and will restore truth and humanity to its original purpose. Some agree with the truth but are not saved. When people accept "the love of the truth," they embrace a Person.
Not receiving the love of the truth leads to judgment. God will make sure those who could have been saved but refuse to be saved will not be saved. They will believe the lie told by the antichrist that he is God. Rejecting the love of the truth contrasts with what God will send. The delusion that the antichrist is "the Christ" will be accepted by those who refuse grace and refuse reconciliation with God. The outcomes of choices determine what happens. People will choose darkness over light, pay attention to lies instead of truth, believe trickery instead of reality, follow Satan instead of God, go to hell instead of heaven, and face eternal death instead of eternal life. Satan focuses all his energy on deception and outright lies.
The statement and the facts must align to be considered the truth. Those who receive the “love of the truth” understand its value because it is embodied in our Lord Jesus Christ. They can believe in Him fully when they trust God’s unchanging Word. To “receive not” the truth means one is rejecting Christ, and to reject Christ signifies that these individuals choose the man of sin over God as a deliberate act of turning away from the light. This act is an act of apostasy by those who abandon the Lord.
To “perish” is not annihilation but to suffer the eternal consequences of sin. When He was here, the Lord promised that would not happen to those who believe in Him but that they would have everlasting life. There is no second chance after the Lord returns to repent and be saved. That opportunity is available in our lifetime before the day of grace ends when the Lord returns. People must believe in Christ while they have the opportunity for salvation because when the Wicked is revealed, it will usher in a time of worldwide condemnation. Judgment is coming, and those who do not receive the love of the truth at this time of grace will learn that Christ–rejecters have taken a fatal step back, and no salvation will be found.
The world, as a whole, will have made a choice when God punishes sin with sin under the reign of the antichrist. They chose not to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ so they might be saved, allowing this man to deceive the people. He claims to be God, this antichrist who steps onto the world’s stage as its leader. Most people wanted to live without God, so God will permit the man of sin to engage them as the answer they sought. Grace has been rejected, and mankind has turned away from what is right to follow their own path. The pleasures of sin have taken hold of them, and new sins emerge each day. People desired to live without God and restraint, like animals let loose. When the antichrist comes, everyone will think they can shed the morality they once saw as a noose restraining them.
The existentialist who thought man was his own god will find a god who is only a man. The sacrilegious man who thought Christianity was a joke will be able to do what he wants. The immoral people will then take advantage of what they consider to be an open society without restraints. The atheist and agnostic will both chuckle at what they consider a victory over the restrictions of the Bible. The man of sin will seize control of everything as day after day, he works his diabolical acts to defeat God's purposes. People will line up to take a number to buy and sell, thinking his promises are facts. God will let them believe the lie until the evil in their hearts is exposed, and then it will finally dawn on the world the kind of god they chose.
He started crying, “Peace,” and people believed he would deliver on his words, not realizing he spoke for the father of lies. They will follow the lie, and in a short time, nearly half the world will be dead. The lie promises much, but like all lies, it deceives people into thinking all is well when things actually worsen. The lie doesn’t take long to show that its origin comes from hell. God will allow this infamous lie to deceive those who refuse the truth. When people choose wrong, some consequences follow: “The soul that sins it shall die.” First dead to God, then dead to righteousness, and physical death follows too. The principle remains, though, “the lie” says, “No.” We reap the results of what we sow.
The deliberate refusal of truth leads to damnation. There is no salvation for those who refuse to believe God's word. No salvation awaits those who seek the pleasures of sin. They take joy in sin and will face its consequences. The five reasons why those who reject the Gospel will not be saved also serve as acts of apostasy. When they turn away from light and "love darkness because their deeds are evil," when they mock righteousness and reject God, and when they enjoy fellowship with evil - they are doomed forever. These serve as warnings to those who are careless today. Such people will not escape God's righteous judgment.
But we are thankful that salvation begins and ends with God. The Holy Spirit has set apart believers in Christ according to God's sovereignty. He causes believers to respond to the truth and be saved. Our Sovereign God controls everything. The Thessalonians need to remember they were saved from wrath through Him and are saved for glory with Him. We rejoice that God loves us and that the Gospel has reached us. How grateful we are for those the Lord has loved and chosen for Himself. God's way of reaching people remains unchanged today.
Paul and those with him proclaimed the Gospel to the Thessalonians so they could share in Christ's glory, and we do the same today with those God has called us to preach to. The Holy Spirit brings salvation through the Gospel and those who preach it. God's message, delivered by God's messenger, in God's power, brings God's salvation so His glory can be shared by His people in His kingdom.
It started when, under the pressure from others, he began to doubt. Snide remarks and suggestions were made; no one had to openly say, “There is no God” or “Up with man” to turn the young Christian away, to whom everything had become new. Teachers at secular schools and friends uninterested in spiritual matters continued their pressure, and soon, the harmful work of sowing doubts was done. The Gospel message seemed like an old story that felt outdated to him, and he was unwilling to make the commitment to Christ that Christians do. Then he began to think that associating with people of faith would ruin the lifestyle he desired, which was centered on the pleasures of sin. So, instead, he chose to reject the truth and deliberately turn away from the light.
It wasn’t long before forbidden pleasures called to him, and he was drawn to them like a moth to a flame. He was attracted to the world’s dazzling lights, not recognizing the danger until he was caught in the burning web of deceit and defeat. The heat of the flame seared his conscience; he knew what he was doing was wrong, but he kept chasing the pleasures of sin and found its temptation too strong. Step by step, he moved forward, only occasionally glancing back at what he had left—what had given peace to his soul. More and more, his unrighteous life left him feeling empty and spiritually hollow. Day after day, he continued down this dark road until he questioned whether there was a God. His soul grew darker and darker, until all of the paths of sin he had tested and tried had consumed him.
He kept going until he reached the point of no return. The God he learned about in his youth was now the God whose grace he rejected. So, when “the lie” appeared, he fell for it completely, trying to fill the emptiness inside him, believing that what this Superman says is what he needs to fill that void. Turning down the chance in this life to accept God’s great salvation will eventually leave him alone on the shore of hell’s dark judgment. There will be no way back because his name is not written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. The person is doomed who does not believe the truth, and the pleasures of sin end in eternal night.
