Listening & Learning — A Devotional

2 Timothy 2:1–7

LOYALTY IN DEVOTED SERVICE

LOYALTY IN DEVOTED SERVICE. 2nd Timothy 2:1-7 Paul writes to Timothy as a father speaking to his son, providing an example of someone who is strong in grace. He begins by calling Timothy a son and concludes by describing him as a servant engaged in public service. Between these two roles as a believer, five examples of occupations are given to illustrate preparation for divine service. In this call to endure, Timothy is referred to as a loved son (child) v.1, a term of affection.

Living by grace means we learn to trust in Christ instead of relying solely on our own strength. We should constantly draw on the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, which His grace provides. Grace (the gift) is found only in Christ. We are saved by grace [Eph. 2:8-9]; we should live by grace [Col. 2:6]. This requires fully trusting in Christ and His power, rather than trying to live for Christ on our own strength. We cannot serve God effectively in our own efforts, but through Christ's grace, we can fulfill His purpose for us. The contrast between the defectors of Asia and the faithfulness of Onesiphorus.
