BAD RESULTS. 2nd Timothy 2:16 False teachers may distort the meaning of the scriptures for their own ends. Bickering over words, opinions, and theories unrelated to a Christian's life of faith should be avoided. The results of arguments and pointless chatter are very negative. Upset feelings, hurt, hostility, and demeaning words are typical outcomes of disputes. While someone may win an argument and get their point across, they often lose influence over the person they defeated. More importantly, winning arguments usually does not help the kingdom of God.
A meaningful discussion aimed at learning more that is beneficial centers on healthy, sound doctrine, not trivial matters. “Profane,” godless, and “vain babbling,” empty talk diverts our conversations away from God and lead to “more ungodliness.” It also keeps us from fulfilling what we are called to do for God, and our minds revert to contention rather than bringing glory to God. Everyone benefits when we focus our thoughts and words on our Lord Jesus Christ.
It is up to us to avoid profane and unfounded theories presented by people who are either not Christians or are self-opinionated believers. They and their teachings must be rejected. The word of truth contrasts the unholy, empty, profitless opinions of those who want to promote their false doctrine as the truth. We are to avoid and reject the ungodliness that infects people like a disease.
