2 Timothy 2:3

A GOOD SOLDIER

A GOOD SOLDIER. 2nd Timothy 2:3 Given Timothy's charge to faithfully pass on God’s truth to men, Paul offered three examples of faithful men: soldiers, athletes, and farmers. These three are marked by endurance through tough times and unforeseen circumstances, and they all endure physical suffering to be strengthened for the task at hand. A soldier who aims to please his commanding officer will endure long hours of physical training to surpass the normal physical abilities of untrained people. He understands that life and death are at stake for himself, those he leads, and those he is called to protect and defend.

Faithful believers who live godly lives will face persecution in one form or another. We share our lives with all who are in the body of Christ, many of whom may be called to suffer physical abuse unto death. Christians throughout history have been martyred in the thousands because of their desire to please the Lord Jesus Christ, who died for them. Many believers today are enduring physical, emotional, and personal suffering for the sake of God's kingdom. People of faith refuse to deny their Lord in any way because they love Him with all their hearts.

We all must face the challenge of living by faith in an ungodly world system. Courage, commitment, and willingness to reject “the pleasures of sin” are essential to please our Supreme Commander. Challenges will always arise in various forms. Some may be direct and physical, while others may be subtle and deceptive. Regardless of the challenges, we must remain faithful stewards of what we have received and ensure we pass it on to others.
