ACTS 13 Set apart to a special work, not a place.
A new convert learns how to study the Bible, memorize, and meditate; he learns to pray and claim God's promises. He gets involved. He begins an obedient walk. He begins to put Christ first, to share the Gospel effectively. He becomes grounded in the basics.
He may have different spheres in life, but his life remains on the same track. As the twig is bent, the tree grows. Trained to be an effective worker for Christ.
I. Selection: A. Careful selection: Thousands heard Christ's call; hundreds followed as disciples, but seventy were selected and trained.
II. Careful training: the difference between a disciple and a laborer (a difference in the matter of depth and degree). A. Qualities:
1. Hunger for a deeper walk with God to learn and grow.
2. Conviction: convinced of the absolute necessity of the basics:
The Bible, hell, lost people without Christ, need of growth. a. Knows why he needs to be alone with God; b. Knows why he studies and memorizes scripture; c. Knows why he witnesses; d. Knows why he prays.
3. Ministry skills: grows in skillful use of the Word, doesn't use the
the Bible as a club but like a surgeon with instruments.
4. Personal holiness: laborer blossoms for God amidst sin and decay.
5. Concern for others: gravitates to people rather than things.
Goals, objectives, and aims; knows where he is going.
6. A clear vision for the potential of others: knows the master plan,
convinced of the need for every Christian to be involved.
7. A servant's heart works at serving others.
8. Cooperation: Don't go it alone. Cheerfully works with others.
He does not have to be in charge—he is content to roll up his sleeves and work as a team player.
9. Availability: "Here am I, send me." He is not too busy to give his life to do what is best. He is available for a real need when it arrives.
III. On-the-job Training: let people learn by association, exposure, teaching, and training.
IV. Setbacks: A. From helpers - Mark; B. From the devil; C. Leadership changes:
1. Barnabas did not change.
a. His heart was still in it; b. Zeal not dampened; c. Spirit not bitter; d. Ego not crushed; e. Recognized and accepted God's leading.
