Colossians 1:16

The Creator

The Creator. Colossians 1:16 Christ, the Son of God, is exalted as the Creator of "all things." There is nothing that exists that He did not create. He existed before "all things" and was prior to everything because He is the Creator—the One who caused it all to happen. It was His word and His power that brought all things into existence according to His own design. In every created thing, there is evidence of His divine personhood's supreme power and unique imprint. He is the reason for everything; all things exist and are sustained through Him. Anything created belongs to Him. He is supreme over all things because He existed before and created everything.

Created things were made out of nothing by the Supreme Author, Agent, and Authority of everything. Everything God created was good. They did not evolve, nor was there morality in them. They are good or bad only as humans use them for right or wrong purposes. The “ages” (worlds) were formed by the word of God, who lives in an endless “Now.” It is in Him that all things exist; through Him, they came into being, and for Him, He has His own purpose and direction for everything.

Visible things teach us about our Lord's intelligence, power, order, and beauty. Invisible things in the spirit world remind us that what is seen is temporary, while what is unseen is eternal. There is far more unseen than seen. Our minds, emotions, and will are unseen aspects that reflect God's image. Principalities and powers are simply government control by the unseen domain of Satan, allowed as tests to reveal our decisions, what we value, and whether we will choose to love God and live with Him forever.

The Colossians may not have understood much about the Lord Jesus Christ when they believed in Him. When they willingly received the message of redemption and the Person who gave His life as a ransom for them, He won their hearts, and with gratitude, they were glad to accept Him. At that time, they did not realize His universal supremacy. All they knew was that they were blessed with God's salvation and forgiven of their sins. They may have understood some of Christ's moral authority but had not yet grasped the full extent of His deity.

Consider "all things," from the smallest to the greatest, including things we see around us and those we cannot see. Who can imagine the inexpressible power of gravitation that keeps our earth in place and everything else in its rightful position? When I open my eyes, I see tall mountains and vast seas, and I learn from the Bible that my personal Savior created each one of these. When I look at a newborn baby, I see tiny body parts and know that God created them, invisible to the eye, from the start.

There are nations that men claim to have established on their own. Some may acknowledge God in this to a small extent, but most do not recognize a higher throne than the one who leads a nation. Even the inner urge we have to pursue and do something new is an act of the Supreme Creator who put that urge within you. Human eyes cannot see the Invisible God of mortal men, but there is evidence of His intelligence and power in all things created by Him. He is the power behind every piece of evidence of existence. Not only did He create them all, but everything we see belongs to Him.
