Colossians 2:4

Enticing Words

Enticing Words. Colossians 2:4. Paul warned the Colossians about the heresy they were drawn to through the deceptive tricks of false words. Spiritual insight reveals that truth has a divine order that comes from God. Faith’s strength counters any heresy because it is rooted in God’s unchanging word. We can truly recognize spiritual maturity when we see or hear it. When someone receives Christ Jesus, the Lord, they haven't just taken up some philosophy or strange ideas; they've welcomed a living Person who rules the universe. Because of Him and who He is, we must be committed to walk in Him. When we receive and walk in Him, we will be rooted and taught in Him. The evidence will be clear, because those who grow in Him are, and always will be, grateful for Him.

It's common for perceived failures in others to be a way to make ourselves feel better. Sometimes, we pass along stories we've heard that put others down so we can elevate ourselves. Then, false accusations are made without reason, with the accuser using inflated language to make things seem worse. Some believe they have secret knowledge that makes them superior. They may use flattering words to boost their image in the eyes of listeners, hoping they will follow them.

The truth is that the knowledge God wants us to have is available to everyone through Christ. We can openly learn everything we need for spiritual illumination through the Holy Spirit. Some false teachers will have us believe that everything physical is bad. They teach that we must rise above others who live in these fleshly bodies before we can know that we have the new life given by the Spirit of God; they talk about "out of the body experiences" as proof of their spirituality and our need for their special influence to get what they claim is missing.

They overlook that Christ lived in a body, was raised from the dead in a glorified body, and our bodies will be like His. God is the One who gave us these fleshly bodies and uses us in them to bless those still outside of His family and, in Christ's name, urges them to come to the Savior. Even though we dwell in physical bodies, we can avoid sin as we submit to God's will and follow the Holy Spirit's guidance. Some may say that Christ only appeared to be human. Because He is God, He could not become a man; it only seemed so to those who observed His actions, listened to His words, and believed He was truly God. Others who speak persuasively claim He was a spirit; He never truly walked on earth.

However, the scriptures are clear: God was here as God in His eternal deity and man in His incarnation when “He was found in fashion as a man.” He never ceased to be God while on earth and performed actions only God can do. As God in human flesh, He became the God-Man. As a man, He could truly identify with us; as God, He could read every mind. There are aspects of the Lord Jesus Christ we may never fully understand, but they do not hinder our faith. He exists in both His human and divine natures; what they do is reveal the fullness of His grace that brought God into the world in the Person of Christ. He is the only sinless one of humanity, and He took our place on the cross to redeem us and bring us to God. In a future day, we will behold His face and see Him as God in His glory.
