Colossians 3:6

The wrath of God

The wrath of God. Colossians 3:6. God's wrath is not petty, unwarranted, or unfair. It is not an irrational, childish burst of anger like that common to humans. It is a holy, just rejection and repulsion against sin. Anything that opposes God’s will and nature is offensive to Him because He is completely holy. He is always opposed to sin and will justly punish those who choose sinful behavior. The wrath of God is real and certain when it comes to sin. If God did not demand justice and punishment when sin happens, He would be unfaithful to His own holy character.

Judicial displeasure is not temperamental but sobering, solemn, and serious. God's wrath is coming on the children of disobedience, but it is also present now by making people aware of the consequences of self-indulgence because they have rejected God, whom they would not have reigning over them. It is good for believers to reflect on the “hole of the pit” from which they have been delivered. It is a righteous act of justice that the disobedient must face, and this cannot be avoided. It remains upon unbelievers who 'believe not” because they refuse to put their faith in Christ. Those who believe in the Son have everlasting life; those who do not, the wrath of God abides on them even now.

This wrath is righteous, like when the law is broken and just punishment falls on those who ignore its precepts. There isn't a lot of complicated wording to cover basic concepts, nor should there be any excuse for not understanding what God says. To disobey means you will be lost because you reject the offer of mercy; to obey means you are accepted, not because of the works you have done, but because you have personally trusted in Christ.

We were once “children of wrath,” but we have been “saved by grace” and delivered from God's wrath. The divine wrath that will come upon those who do evil serves as a warning to believers in Christ to avoid, forsake, reject, and flee from sin. “Children of disobedience” are those who choose to disobey God because they are “children” who walk according to “the prince of the power of the air”—the devil.

The wrath of God is upon all who do not believe in Him, and it will fall on all people and nations who resist His will. Because of hardness and refusal to repent from the heart, wrath is being stored up in view of the coming day of wrath and righteous judgment when God sentences Christ-rejecters to everlasting destruction. There will be a final and future punishment for those who disobey God's moral law and ignore its unchanging standards. This is a day of saving grace when God offers full and free salvation through faith in Christ. There is coming a judgment day, not to determine if one is saved, but to reveal the results of sins committed and not forgiven because a sinner didn’t take God’s word seriously and repent of their sins. To disobey God and reject the Savior now will be openly exposed by Him.

Some people don’t take immorality seriously, but God does. When people reject or ignore God’s holy standards, there are consequences now along the road of “free love,” and all that lures people to leave what is meant to be holy and “do what comes naturally.” The eternal consequences that await in the future cannot be avoided when we choose to disobey what God forbids. There is no return from the lake of fire and no escaping the consequences of God’s righteous wrath.

Children of disobedience are like children who ignore the instruction and guidance of caring parents who have gone before them and pass on what they personally know to be true. They have learned what is right and seek to show their children what to believe and how to live. However, they can't control the inner will of a child who refuses their advice.

There will come a day when disobedience will be revealed as the rebellion against God that it truly is. Those who ignore God’s word and reject Him in their lives will find the gates of heaven permanently closed to them. If you're tempted to ignore, disobey, or reject God, remember you were warned multiple times; it is written in God's Word.
