Deuteronomy 17:18–19

He shall write

He shall write. Deuteronomy 17:18-19. “And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests and the Levites: and it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them:”

A leader is one of us—he knows our names, habits, and culture. He is not a stranger to the Lord our God—God chose him to lead. He is our brother so he can live like us and among us. He knows that as our king he rules—under One higher than he—the Lord God reigns.

He leads not for selfish gain or to accumulate possessions but as a steward for God. Not to indulge in lust and pleasure – not to return to the world; he leads the people of God in separation from it. Not for wealth and personal satisfaction and not as a priest before God; he leads and rules over the people by divine appointment – for God. One of his primary duties when he sits upon Israel’s throne is to learn the books of the law and the statutes. He can read them, but he must also copy them to learn them personally. Page after page, the king reads and writes so that the words might impress him. Every day of his life, he must read and re-read to fear his God – and to learn.

A reader's heart gathers a lot of information from reading words we know are true and reliable. A leader can be called to guide an assembly or a nation, and does so more effectively through reading. Someone who commits to writing relevant information starting from the day of salvation will discover divine illumination from God's words and perhaps their own thoughts. It’s not enough to know things as a general rule; you can learn that at home or in school. When you write down what the Lord God says to you, those words of truth and righteousness light up your soul. It would be wrong to expect others to obey and respect if a leader of an assembly doesn’t take the time to gather spiritual truth for himself. It takes grace to be a genuine leader guiding God’s people and feeding them from green pastures.

When a person learns the truth from God Himself through the Bible, it becomes real to them as they gain a proper understanding of themselves. We can generally recognize the value of God's Word and the teachings it offers. However, truly understanding its meaning and applying what is taught requires reading it carefully and thoroughly. This helps us know what we should or should not do when offering God our sacrifices of praise, worship, and thanksgiving. It also shows us that making wise decisions often depends on seeking good counsel from others. Additionally, we will understand what the right action is when we are called to take responsibility for God's people.
