Listening & Learning — A Devotional

Introduction

NOT ALL ARE ALIKE

NOT ALL ARE ALIKE Some seem as brave as a lion when they speak with loud, swelling words and puffed-up chests—bravery? No obstacles appear to diminish their confidence or quiet their noise. There is arrogant strutting as they parade before adoring crowds, and they look like they are part of a strong, bold soldier. And then the battle: self-confidence vanishes, and fears come, leaving them cowering, hiding, alone, and behind.

A quiet-spoken man with an invisible sense of personhood and a cautious presence is aware of his surroundings. He is willing to listen and learn silently or through observation and quiet questions. When he mingles among others, they sense calmness and quiet confidence in God. He is a dependable man. When the battle arrives, he keeps his eyes on the commander and follows orders. He is an effective man.

Fear is in their eyes at the word “war,” fainthearted, darting eyes showing terror, lacking confidence, with weak knees and hands wringing with sweat yet cold – they seem unable to face war. They are unsure of themselves and others, and they carry a palpable fear. They stay apart and alone, and appear to be a problem for everyone. When the battle comes, don’t take them; leave them behind. They can’t help it.

Whether one is noisy and arrogant, quiet and courageous, or fearful and fainthearted, there is work for everyone. Some rally the people, stirring the hearts of the masses and awakening them to the need. Some do the work not for the praise of men, but only to please the One who chose them. Others return home, working quietly in a field, in safety, to provide for others. And in the battle: each person has a part – some live, some die, some pray — and victory is achieved!

“All-Powerful God, the battle is here; now, many do not realize this. The enemy is working unseen, forming bulwarks against our Gospel, making fear a reality to some. The fear of man is a real snare here, and people hardly know they are afraid because they have become comfortable with the enemy. Rouse my heart and soul to rise to the challenges that lie before us in the coming months of Gospel outreach. May the saints be rallied, the warriors be made ready, and those who supply be ready for their part in the struggle of life or death. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.”
