Exodus 22:16–31

Laws regarding moral sensitivity,

Laws regarding moral sensitivity, Exodus 22:16-31 God provided clear laws to govern people's actions. Enticing a young woman to give in to a man's advances was a legal issue; either marriage or a dowry served as restitution. A person's intentions must be clear, and social conduct should follow the path of respect and righteousness, preserving one's dignity and integrity.

Satanic practices attract many people's fascination with the dark side. Some individuals are developing interest in video games, board games, and even religious rituals. Today, people are intrigued by movies and television shows that involve witchcraft and occult practices. According to God's laws, this was a capital offense because it aimed at death, and people aligned themselves with Satan against God. Sorcery is an act of rebellion against God's authority.

Rebellion against God’s authority stems from Satan's influence. He employs sorcery, witchcraft, and any form of dark power that evil forces can summon to harm humans and prevent them from receiving God's salvation. People's lifestyles reveal their desires and whom they serve. What they believe is evident, especially in the pleasures they seek and how they choose to spend their leisure time.

Aliens should be treated fairly by the Israelites because they were foreigners in a land for four hundred years. Even though generations of children had been born, and generations had died and been buried in Egypt, they were still regarded as outsiders. They were to show God's kindness to strangers among them by being generous to those who were defenseless. The testimony of those who belonged to God was revealed through their actions and their attitude in helping those in need.

It is wrong for us to ignore the needs of others we do not know. It is wrong to mistreat aliens who come into a new environment where they feel out of place and alone. Strangers, immigrants, foreign students, and refugees need someone to show them God's love and kindness. A sensitivity to the needs of strangers is necessary because we might be strangers ourselves somewhere, at some time. Those who have experienced the loneliness of being the new person on a job, in the classroom, or at a family gathering can understand a little of what it is like to be a stranger. We should be fair and responsible toward those in need and provide the right help, assistance, and counsel.

Widows and orphans require special care and attention. We must remember that besides financial needs, other needs follow death and the separation it causes within a family. Mistreating the poor and less fortunate among us is taken very seriously by God, who has given us laws to guide us in how we treat these people. Needs vary, so those who come close should offer comfort and assistance, understand what a person truly needs, and find the best way to meet those needs.

Care and caution are essential when lending and borrowing. Compassion, compared to seeking quick profit, makes the difference between being helpful and being greedy. Generosity in lending to someone in need or borrowing carries the risk of not being appreciated or of never getting back what was lent. It's not wrong to seek some security, but demanding an item essential for survival is unfair and not permitted by God. Excessive interest is not a fair way to protect a loan. If a loan of property or money leaves doubt as to whether it will be repaid, don’t make the loan.

Fairness and righteousness are interconnected. Overcharging for goods and services, excessive interest rates, and lack of compassion all carry negative consequences imposed by God when crimes are committed against humanity and normal human living. We owe respect to those who lead us in the nation, even if they are unfit. The commandments uphold order even when tyrants are in power.

The law of first fruits and the firstborn was meant to remind the children of Israel that God had redeemed them. It was not about paying God back for what He had done, but about recognizing what He had given them. God holds first priority in our family, finances, and food. He has provided all these things from His fullness and love for us. Sometimes, the best way to show appreciation is through our actions with what we have rather than just words. Giving God the first of everything He has given us is our privilege. We would have nothing without His gracious daily provision from His great storehouse. The main purpose of these laws is to set us apart as holy people for God and to help us be like Him.
