Listening & Learning — A Devotional

Exodus 32:18

Two tablets

Two tablets. Exodus 32:18 At the end of God’s meeting with Moses, He gave Moses two stone tablets on which He had inscribed the commandments with His own finger. These tablets outlined the fundamental principles of the law that established the covenant. Covenant relationships are lasting and are meant to continue as long as the covenant's terms specify. These were intended to be perpetual memorials. Therefore, they were carved in stone by God's own finger.

Each tablet likely had the same words inscribed: one for God and one for His people. Being placed in the ark of the covenant was the safest place in the world because anyone who entered that area or even looked into the ark would immediately die.

In our case, the terms of the covenant with His people last forever. The terms of the new covenant are written by God's finger on the “fleshly tables of our hearts.” His word guides us to our duty to God and others. It clearly testifies to God's will for us and His goodwill through us.
