Galatians 3:23–29

Children of God

Children of God. Galatians 3:23-29 When someone becomes a Christian, they are no longer bound by the law (the schoolmaster) and can now take their place as a free Son. We are no longer limited by the constraints of the law, but instead are identified through our relationship with Christ. Believing in our Lord Jesus Christ changes how we relate to God, to people who are different from us, and to those who are part of God’s people. Our identity is not based on nationality or religious belief. When someone is baptized, they publicly declare their faith in Christ and have “put on Christ” as a Christian.

We are united with Him and become like Him. The context of verse 28 is that those who are justified by faith in Christ are not prevented from having fellowship with others who are in Christ. Our identity is that of someone who has been saved by God's grace through faith. Nationality, class, skin color, or gender have nothing to do with our acceptance by God. Both men and women are equal in Christ Jesus. Women, who were given a lower position in Jewish tradition and in most cultures, are recognized in the new covenant as equals with men, even though their public roles may differ.

Previous obstacles no longer cause us to envy, hate, or look down on others. All of us have received mercy from God and are equally heirs of God's promises. This is not because of what we say about the matter but because both are "in Christ." No longer is there bondage placed on God's people like that of immature children who do not know how to behave and need the threat of the law to keep them in line with what is acceptable.

He, the Spirit of truth, has come, and we have been adopted into God’s family and received the Spirit. The Spirit of God’s Son is in our hearts, and the words “Abba Father” come naturally to us who have been born again. He has given us life: the new birth, regeneration, born of the Spirit, brings genuine life. Love has arrived; God's love is shed abroad in our hearts by the Spirit, and we are made heirs of God's through the Spirit. He dwells within us and assures us of eternal life. He has sealed us with Himself, acting as a true Teacher who goes beyond words to give eternal life itself.

We trust by faith that He is teaching us because we can see and feel the change inside. We love and trust this Teacher, the Holy Spirit, who lives in us, empowers us, and uses us to further God's work. He provides everything we need in abundance as He ministers, trains, and guides us. He offers wisdom beyond our experience, knowledge far greater than what we've learned, and faith focused on a Person—covering healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, and interpretation. He is our Divine Teacher—we have received the promise of the Spirit.

A much stronger motivation drives the actions of a child of God. We are part of “the seed of Abraham” and have a place in God's plan and among His people. That person is identified with Christ and, out of gratitude and love, does what is right. The one seed we received from Abraham, which is faith, guides our daily lives and gives us the motivation to want to please God. As heirs of God's promises and blessings, our lives take on a new purpose regarding the future and a renewed motivation for daily living. Salvation is ours, and all its blessings are accessible to us through faith!
