INHERITANCE. Joshua 13:14. “Only unto the tribe of Levi He gave none inheritance; the sacrifices of the Lord God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as He said unto them.” An inheritance originally belonged to someone else. People who lived long before us paid its price. For reasons only known to the giver, who passes on what was theirs, it is now owned at least twice. The second owner has the inheritance because the giver chose, of their own free will, to pass it on. The inheritor only needs to accept the gift because it was bought by someone who lived before us. Inheritance has a different value than ordinary things. It’s not just measured by money. Someone values you personally and entrusts you with what’s important to them. To Israel, it was a land flowing with milk and honey, the land promised by God to Abraham as his inheritance. Others had taken over Canaan for several hundred years, but it became Israel’s homeland as the Israelites, by God's power, conquered the promised lands.
To us, our spiritual inheritance comes from God. Its benefits and blessings are countless. It has been provided, paid for, and freely given to us through Christ, our Living Lord. How much is eternal life worth when given as a gift? Who can put a value on a gift paid for with blood? Yet, despite its infinite value, it is only the first installment of all we will inherit in Christ Jesus our Lord. When we were adopted and became children of God, we became heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus. That is a glorious truth made real by His undeserved mercy freely shown to us. Now, we are made rich—who once were very poor—and are inheritors of spiritual gifts by His amazing grace.
