Leviticus 20

SANCTIFY YOURSELVES

SANCTIFY YOURSELVES. Leviticus 20 Chapter 20 discusses examples of the evil practices from chapters 18 and 19. The punishments for disobeying God's laws are very clear. Sin is serious to God, and the sinful practices of the nations surrounding Israel were not permitted. The difference between what social groups did and what God allowed was completely opposite.

Consecrating ourselves to God will set us apart from behaviors now considered acceptable in our society. Many are attracted to forbidden activities driven by a rebellious desire to oppose God and reject the teachings of the Bible. For some reason, to many people, "forbidden waters are sweet" — but only for a very short time. There are serious and lasting consequences when we follow the passions of the world, the flesh, and the devil. Israel was warned beforehand about what to avoid, what not to do, and what not to permit, but over time, they yielded to the attractions that were specifically forbidden and faced terrible results.

The devil's deceptions have targeted humans since the beginning of human history. Critics who judge morality by satanic standards still condemn death for sin. The children of Israel were warned to protect their children, but over time, they fell prey to the false gods the devil introduced to pagan nations. They believed that these gods needed to be appeased with their best offerings, which included their children. The One True God, who is full of love and not vengeful, wants to bless His own people. Yet, when they sacrificed their children under the devil's influence, they faced death themselves to protect the nation.

Those who practiced child sacrifice were to be put to death. If the entire community ignored the sin of the person who offered their child as a sacrifice, God cut him and his family off from all the people to maintain the social order properly. Occult practices were also to be addressed by removing those involved from the community.

Sexual sins were addressed to uphold a moral way of life for the entire social system—some resulted in punishment by death, and others led to banishment from the community. The Lord's aim was for His people to stand out from those around them who worshiped idols. God’s people are to reflect His character and demonstrate the uniqueness of love and grace. God intends for His people to be holy before Him because He is the holy Lord God, and we are members of His family.

We now have laws created by men that allow us to legally end the lives of our unborn children without facing legal consequences. Those who do such acts will find themselves with consequences they must endure until death. God is the God of life, who desires health and happiness for people, and He has established how this can be maintained through His laws. God cares for the unwanted children, widows, and the lost. It is undeniable that His ways are the best for preserving life, love, and happiness—but people reject Him and blame Him for holding back from us. Instead of doing that, God gave His "only begotten Son,' so that we might live through Him.

The devil has also attracted God's ancient people with occult and occultist practices. Even today, many are drawn to games created by dark forces that feature dark, murderous themes. We must accept that Satan's goals have not changed, and his tactics do not show any signs of weakening. Instead, with technological advances, he is using these tools to push his agenda through games, social media, television, and other means. Lies, deception, and harmful practices continue to draw people in.

The flesh has never changed, either. Sexual sins have always been a problem for mankind throughout history. What was intended to be a blessing in marriage and home life often becomes a curse when a man's vow to one woman for life is broken. Not only has uncontrolled flesh led to unhappiness in marriage and threatens the marital commitment, but it can also destroy the family unit and harm the child-parent relationship that is vital for the next generation. Additionally, uncontrolled sexual activity spreads disease and distorts people's minds so much that what is wrong no longer feels wrong.

God forbade such immoral acts and warned of serious consequences for those who partake in them to protect His people as a whole. Because of His love for us, He provided strict guidelines and laws to safeguard the well-being and health of His people. Those who deliberately reject His revealed will in this matter are dealt with according to His laws because they refuse His grace. God's prohibitions against evil acts are acts of love, not signs of divine anger.

The people of God in those days had laws to guide them within a societal system that had developed, which was contrary to God's design. Therefore, the rules He provided were for a reason. Any rules we establish in families and governments should have a proper purpose. Spiritual laws given by God truly work. They have been effective for centuries when people obey and follow them. God's laws, when followed, protect us from self-destruction and encourage honorable, joyful living.

The guidelines set by God, when followed and enforced, maintain peace and help people lead meaningful lives with fulfilling outcomes. The consequences of breaking those divine laws are suffering and separation. Our nation and generation are experiencing hardship and division today because of the rejection of God's laws and standards, along with the imposition of laws that have been altered to accommodate immoral and unrestrained behaviors that please those who live only for the moment.

God's people should remember to sanctify themselves and remain holy, regardless of current trends. What people do today does not alter the standards of righteousness that God has already established. Those who are dedicated to God owe their allegiance solely to Him. He is a God whose nature is love, life, and light. He cares for helpless children and is concerned about their well-being. He is selfless to the point of sacrificing Himself for our sins.
