Ignorance. Leviticus 4:1-2. A priest might say, “I didn’t know,” but because of who he is, he should pause and consider, “Is this God’s will? Would this be right? Should I go ahead and take this food or drink?” To teach priests what not to do, there was a price to pay so they would never again carelessly or intentionally claim ignorance for some personal sin. He had to pay a bullock for the ignorant act he had never thought of. The next time he faced a choice, he would take the time for serious reflection.
If the nation committed a sinful act and didn’t realize it was wrong, they all had to come to the altar together and bring a bullock to be offered. One by one, the elders of the people would lay their hands on the animal’s head, and on behalf of everyone, this sinless beast would take their place, and its blood was shed. The fat was burned on the altar for God, and the bullock was burned outside the camp. The nation would learn from watching that ignorance is no excuse; sin has consequences.
The ruler was to bring a young “he-goat” because, as a leader, he should understand what is best. The actions they take without thinking them through have damaging effects on everyone else. The common man, too, was without excuse. When in ignorance, he would act hastily; he is responsible, even if he doesn’t realize that his actions could have bad effects. A young “she-goat” with no blemish was how he would learn that ignorance comes with a cost. None of us can claim that being wrong isn’t our fault. Christ is for me, and He is the only sacrifice able to satisfy God for my sin.
Sin, whether committed in ignorance or by choice, carries a cost. The sound of a guilty conscience’s voice calls out for the mercy of grace. Who, where, and what can help ease the need for acceptance and forgiveness? Is there anyone I can turn to for mercy for the wrong I have done? Is there a place for repentance for the sin I regret?
Yes! God shall be praised forever. He provided me with the perfect Substitute, a spotless Lamb, He sent from a distant land, who is a suitable Substitute. He can satisfy God’s actual demand and meet my great need because, by His own choice, He stretched out His hands on that Roman cross. He who was pure identified Himself with this low sinner, so defiled, and now, with a confident but trembling hand, I reach out to Him and am reconciled.
