Listening & Learning — A Devotional

Philippians 1:16

Adding Affliction

Adding Affliction. Philippians 1:16. “The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:” Some very well-known preachers' words may sound right, but their motives are insincere. It seems like they want to make the burdens we carry heavier. I am unsure what motivation or satisfaction they would get by adding pain to the existing difficulties and suffering some of the Lord’s people face. Perhaps they see some financial gain that could come from seizing the moment and pushing a point that makes listeners feel convicted. However, preaching God’s glorious Gospel in mockery on television, radio, or on a public platform is a serious act that can never be undone.

Some preachers may do so out of selfish reasons. Some preach for money, some for fame, some for power, and others to compete with different denominations or churches. They might believe that those who listen will all turn away from him, who was called by God to preach Christ and His salvation. Preachers are told to go into all the world to reach those who wouldn't hear it unless something unusual brought them there.

We will not despair, even if few listen to the Gospel, because we know God brought us here. Though the reasons may be unclear now, we know we are here to share God’s truth. It is our duty to preach the word faithfully and according to Scripture. It is God who blesses His word and saves precious souls. Despite additional hardships, God can be glorified—even in situations where we seem to be losing. Blessings come to those who hear God's word, and that is what we must preach here because the Lord has sent us.

Let us rejoice when God uses others to continue advancing the work of the Lord that we once did. They may approach it differently, so we must acknowledge them as the Lord's servants for that time and place. Paul was neither self-seeking nor full of self-pity because of his circumstances. He could, and we should, celebrate what God was doing through others as well as through himself. It is not wrong to ask for prayer that the difficulties will pass. But there are resources and power in the Spirit that can change everything instantly if that is God's will. When that doesn't happen, it is up to us to turn that time into an opportunity for the Gospel rather than doubt God's faithfulness. What might have caused sadness can instead bring joy.
