Listening & Learning — A Devotional

Philippians 1:3

Every Remembrance

Every Remembrance. Philippians 1:3. “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,” Giving thanks to God for others is a vital part of our prayers. I recall my earliest memories of people, places, and things and find many reasons to thank God. I thank Him for praying parents and open Bibles from which I learned to read as a young child. Reflection on the impact of written words and eternal truths influenced my mind at a young age and guided me to express gratitude. Gathering with the Lord’s people to worship, pray, and hear biblical instruction reminds me to thank God. The holy fellowship with those of “like precious faith” led to sharing communion with the Lord and them at the Lord’s Supper and other gatherings of the saints. I am personally moved to give thanks.

I thank God for over sixty-five years of working in the Gospel—preaching, teaching, and striving to serve His people—and for the precious souls saved. I rejoice in seeing new believers learn spiritual truths and listen to scriptural teaching, their hearts and minds open to hearing God's voice. Villages, towns, and cities call to my heart and soul, eager for us to reach out and find open doors. Remarkably, some doors open for us to go through and sow precious seed, and I am thankful. Gathering with the Lord’s people in many places and countries to worship our Savior and Lord, we unite in giving God thanks.

For a wife joined in the Lord and a family united, which I pray will grow into spiritual harmony, I give thanks. I am grateful for the assurance that the work we do together is meaningful. There is a sense of certainty and fulfillment in doing God's will side by side as fellow workers. I thank God for her endurance through lonely times and her adaptability. I give thanks for her willingness to live an unconventional lifestyle and maintain harmony, for miles traveled without complaint, and for her enduring embarrassment and my humor with integrity. I thank God for every remembrance of my parents, the congregation, and my wife.
