Not Wanting to be a Bother. Philippians 2:26. “For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick.” We can’t help being interested in what is happening to others, and like to know how they are doing because they are objects of our affection. At the same time, we don’t want them to be distracted or to give us all their attention because they have a much higher One who should be their focus. The Lord Jesus is the One who unites us all and intends for us to work out our salvation.
No matter how great he is, a man is not the final solution to the problems that arise among God’s people. God Himself is the only One who is our Great Consolation. Usually, people can only see an issue from their own perspective. The person whom the Spirit of God guides is the trusted one in this situation.
I understand the concern of the people in a gathering when one of their own is ill. However, his or her health may be restored while disunity among them persists. A person of faith trusts God for their health and is aware that God’s will is being fulfilled. Whether healthy or sick, they desire God’s people to be united and willing to fulfill their responsibilities. Kind words and actions in a person are beautiful because of their confidence and quiet trust in God's sovereignty.
Faith helps him understand that God has permitted him to suffer. Hope in the promises God has made encourages him to act as he feels compelled to toward those he loves in the faith. Examples of men who love the Lord, serve Him, and remain faithful to Him show us how God teaches us to consider one another to “provoke to love and good works.”
