Philippians 3:1–11

EXHORTATIONS FOR LIVING

EXHORTATIONS FOR LIVING. Philippians 3:1-11 This begins the practical section of Philippians as Paul assesses himself and others much like an accountant sums up figures to determine profit or loss. Warnings are given for the benefit of believers against false teachers, against self-righteousness in themselves, against the idea that we achieve complete perfection through our efforts, and against false professions from some who claim to be Christians.

This is a call to identify what kind of Christian I am. To rejoice in the Lord, I must find my joy in Him, not in myself, my religious heritage, or the works I do in His service. Life's circumstances may bring brief moments of rejoicing, but rejoicing in the Lord in this life depends on my spiritual condition. This can be upheld through the discipline I impose on myself and the commitments I make. Then, I will rejoice in Christ Jesus now and look forward to future joy.
