Pre-Christian. Philippians 3:4. “Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more:” The intellect existed before the young man was saved, but it was used solely for self-improvement and gaining knowledge. His physical strength was also present but was only employed for self-interest. His character was there as well, serving as a genuine source of pride for his parents and perhaps secretly for himself. All the human qualities, both external and internal, were there to make him skilled and successful. Yet, despite all these traits functioning together, there was still darkness, never light.
He was highly regarded by the leaders who needed someone like him, capable of leading others to follow his commands simply because he said so. Not everyone can do that, even if they are educated at top schools and skilled at debating and answering questions. He was consistently on the fast track, quick to handle serious situations and reach conclusions. All these skills and talents come from a well-trained mind, but none can truly satisfy or bring lasting peace.
Heritage gives a sense of worth connected to those who lived before us with the same family name or national identity. Education has its role, but the true man remains the same in character and nature. Religion provides many answers about the future, according to church or synagogue leaders. Patriotism offers a sense of pride but is solely rooted in culture. All of these have a place in a natural man, but they don’t make someone a Christian. Humble pride and being awakened to sin and its consequences lead to repentance and contrition. When these are genuine, it’s only a step to Jesus.
We need to recognize those who focus only on appearances. The real circumcision is of the heart, not the outward body. True worship comes from the Spirit of God, not merely religious rituals. Genuine glory is found in Christ alone, not in our actions or accomplishments gained through self-effort. Genuine confidence is rooted in God Himself, not in fleshly things. These three traits reflect the new nature. Legal righteousness is based on self-confidence, whereas true righteousness remains steadfast because we have the mind of Christ.
