Romans 1:3

The Seed

The Seed. Romans 1:3 The origins were promised long ago before the Lord Jesus Christ was born. David called the One who would be born of His seed according to the flesh, his Lord. Not his son - his Lord, his Master. He knew, and Abraham knew, and people of faith knew One was coming who would fulfill God's promise of good news. Emphasis is placed on the fact that the Gospel concerns “Jesus Christ our Lord” so that readers of Romans will know He is a deity in His nature. He is the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies relating to the Messiah of the Jews. An equal point to be made is that Jesus Christ, our Lord, was also human in His nature, which He took upon Himself as a descendant of David.

Now, He has come; the Eternal Son of the Eternal God was, and is forever, Jesus Christ our Lord. He was made (born as to His earthly life) a descendant of David [Isa.9:7; Jer.23:5; Gal.4:4]. The promise was that the One sitting on David's throne would rule the nations, and through Him, all nations of the earth would be blessed. Jesus Christ was God in humanity (according to the flesh), and at the same time never ceased being God. He was, and still is, the Lord of lords. "For to this end Christ died, and rose and revived, that He might be Lord." The Lord Himself was here, visible to human eyes, audible to human ears, and touchable to human hands. He was the God-Man, and hypostatic union is in Him alone. Only Jesus Christ, our Lord, is a divine Person and a human Person in one body. He was seen and testified to his nature by God Himself in audible words and by those who believe in their words and actions.

Some things for us to consider, as we who have been made “partakers of the divine nature,” worship, remember, and represent our Lord, and explain what we know about Him to others. His humanity [Gen.3:15]: He was the seed of the woman. He who was infinite became an infant, born of a woman, not begotten of a man. His nationality [Gen.22]: He was of the seed of Abraham. His royalty [Ps.89:4]: He was of the seed of David. His deity [Isa.7:3]: A Child is born – a human beginning; a Son is given - you can’t give what you don’t already have. His government [Isa.9]: His sovereign Sonship. His suffering [Ps.22]: He was unique in birth, unique in life, unique in death, and the first to be resurrected in a glorified body. His supremacy [Micah 5:2]: His incarnation was an act of His own choosing. “He took upon Himself the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of men.”

The impact of this is felt all over the world wherever the Gospel is preached. Confession with the mouth that Jesus is Lord is fundamental to being saved. With confidence in Him, a person testifies of personal faith in a Living Lord. In declaring the Gospel, we are telling people that the One who died for our sins and was buried rose again and is the Lord of everyone who comes by faith to trust in Him. This benevolent Master has committed Himself to us as our Savior. Now, we commit ourselves to Him in glad obedience as our Lord. His "yoke is easy," and His "burden is light." False gods and Satan himself put a hard yoke of bondage and burdens on those under their control that ultimately breaks them and sends them to hell. Praise God for the great King who reigns over us, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Some links to be made between verse three and verse four: “Who was made” – “Who was appointed;” “From the seed of David” – “Son of God with power;” “According to the flesh” – “According to the Spirit of holiness (raised from the dead).”
