Listening & Learning — A Devotional

1 Thessalonians 5:5

Live in the Light

Live in the Light. 1st Thessalonians 5:5 It is our duty to remain spiritually aware, not indifferent like those who lack interest in the things of God. They deliberately ignore God and choose to dismiss His word. Conversely, Christians should be mentally and spiritually attentive to everything happening around us. We need to stay steady and not panic because of the increasing ungodliness, and what others might claim as signs of Christ's coming.

Christians are no longer living in the darkness of unbelief. Morally, spiritually, and intellectually, we are always aware that the Lord is coming at any moment. Through the scriptures, we have been taught by the Holy Spirit of God about “things to come.” We also have warnings in the word of God about those believers in the past who did well most of the time, but when they let their guard down, slept when they should have been awake, and grew careless as they aged, they failed in their commitment to God.

It is fitting that we stay alert to the signs of the times and let this awareness motivate us to actively seek and participate in the things of God. The common example of sleeping is used to illustrate man's indifference to God. People are spiritually asleep because they want to indulge in their own pursuits and pleasures. As a result, they are spiritually indifferent to what matters in the future and live only for the present.

“Sons of light and sons of the day” signifies that we have been made alive as children of God, instructed by His truth, and renewed by the Holy Spirit. Christians are not of the night or darkness. Children of God are children of light and of the day, characterized by the divine nature that has been given to us. Christians not only live and walk in the light, but they are the “light of the world.” They are marked by moral, spiritual, and intellectual illumination.
