Be Aware. 1st Thessalonians 5:6-7 Spiritual lethargy and complacency are mental and heart conditions that make us insensitive to what is going on around us. Sadly, they are common among those who are not saved and can sometimes be found in believers who have been sidetracked by listening to or engaging in things that focus on self and sin. We need to remember our Lord told us to take up the cross and follow Him. That means there is movement and purpose behind the command.
On the other hand, God's people are aware of what is happening around us. Those who wait for the Lord's return are self-controlled individuals who are steady in their lives and faith. We understand the consequences of sin from the historical accounts in scripture and from secular history. The learning process has clarified this for us, and we live in the light of day, where everything is exposed. There is a clear difference between a believer's perspective on events and that of those who choose to deceive themselves. Stability and sober, self-controlled conduct are found in those who understand what God is doing.
Being aware of what is happening around us makes us conscious of what is essential so that we can focus on that work. Superficial and temporary things should not consume all of our attention and time. Those who are spiritually asleep are insensitive to the needs around them and to what they should be doing.
Indifference to God's matters is a sign of unbelievers. Sleepy people are unresponsive and spiritually irresponsible, as if they were intoxicated. Someone who is drunk is controlled by a spirit of darkness that drives them to behave uncontrollably. When that happens, people say and do things that are completely inappropriate and that they would never do when sober.
