Listening & Learning — A Devotional

1 Timothy 3:14

WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS

WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS. 1st Timothy 3:14. Some information is passed from person to person by word of mouth. However, with different accents in the far north and the warmer south of the same country, it is often necessary to ask for repetitions to clearly understand what was said. The speaker may not be sure if the instructions are followed, so they write them down to ensure what has been said is remembered. This way, the instructions are made clear and followed correctly as intended. Then, they can continue with their work, confident that the words they shared will be reviewed frequently until the lesson is learned and applied.

In God’s infinite wisdom, He knew we would easily forget what we heard once and might neglect to follow divine instructions. So, He ensured that those who received the word of truth from Him would write it down, so the value of His teaching would be available to read repeatedly until it became ingrained in the minds of the leaders. Then, they would act according to God's word and be qualified to teach the people they led.

The quick schemes of man used to save time don’t work to take holy things and impress them on the minds of those whose lives are meant to reflect what they teach. Things we hear can also be lost when listening to those who preach because many subjects are often taught at once. The fact that God has His will written in a book, the Holy Bible, is evidence that all the different writers and the many years it took to write it, as “holy men of old were moved by the Holy Spirit,” was part of a plan God had that remains very important. These things were written for us so that we can know and do His will.

Every part of the Bible has a positive purpose in teaching God's truth; it "is profitable for doctrine." “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable…” 2 Timothy 3:16. The holy scriptures clearly and accurately reveal God to us. They expose false and misleading teachings that are often subtle and seductive. Usually, the scriptures are taught by others who have experienced their power in their own lives. The holy scriptures are meant to be passed down to the generations behind us. They are validated through how we live by and live out their teachings. Seeing a holy life lived under the authority of Scripture shows us what life is truly meant to be.

The reason the impact of the holy scripture is so profound and the dedication of Bible-believing Christians to it is so strong is because we know they are inspired by God. He has breathed out the thoughts of His great heart of love and left them for us in the holy scriptures. When they are read, studied, and understood, the truths of the scripture become the foundation and guidance for how we live our lives. God speaks to us in this extraordinary way, and we can review, reread, and remember His words throughout our entire lifetime. The results of learning, knowing, and practicing the holy scriptures won’t truly be seen until a future day, “When the words that I have spoken, the same will judge you at the last day.” Its doctrine provides us with God's truth to prepare us for every need. It brings conviction and correction when we need reproof. It sets right what may have been wrong and teaches us to be what we should be before God.
