1 Timothy 3:4

RESPECT

RESPECT. 1st Timothy 3:4. A leader is expected to be vigilant, temperate, and sober. Someone committed to sobriety keeps his head in all situations and is not easily sidetracked. He is serious about his work and earnest in achieving the right results. He does not diminish the work of the Lord he is called to by foolishness. His self-control reflects a balanced mind, shown through good behavior, and he is orderly, as one who is modest. That leader is organized in his thinking, living, and teaching. His disciplined life is not chaotic but dignified, fitting for one of God's sons who knows he represents His Lord and Master. Someone who practices hospitality shows he is the same in private as he is in public. He has no reason not to care for those under his leadership and loves the stranger [Rom.12:3; Heb.13:2; 3Jn. 5-8] who comes under his influence.

The ability to teach is one thing. “Apt to teach” means he has developed skills in teaching that are ready to be used to instruct others. He is a careful student of the Word. A pastor is a teacher who is proficient in passing on truth in ways that those he teaches can understand. One must be secure and strong in faith. What I believe must be firmly in place before it has the necessary weight to be accepted by those being taught. A leader who teaches must not indulge in excess wine. A person who leads others must be under the control of the Holy Spirit, not the evil spirits that may be in intoxicating drinks and drugs that others might use in leisure or even on special occasions. The use of wine in Bible times and today is different. Romans 14:21 would especially apply now.

Spiritual “elders” refer to their maturity and spiritual capacity as shepherds who are called upon to do spiritual work. The term "bishop" pertains to the pastor, elder, and overseer. “Overseer” is the word that best describes a bishop. [1Pe.5:1-3; Acts 20:17,28; 1Tim.4:14; Titus 1:5-7]. An elder is an older man with experience. A pastor has the heart of a shepherd and cares for the well-being of the believers under his care. Bishops are overseers who visit those under their care to ensure their welfare.
