Listening & Learning — A Devotional

1 Timothy 5:16

FAMILY RESPONSIBILITY

FAMILY RESPONSIBILITY. 1st Timothy 5:16. Yes, they are alone in one way, but it is their choice in another. They would not have to stay alone if they listened to the family’s voice, because there are sons, daughters, and other close kin who clearly tell the widow she can come and live with them. Sometimes there is a sense of pride, and sometimes one is simply stubborn. Widows determined to keep things as they always were may expect too much from them. They resist the family’s care and plan, wanting only their own way, but in such cases, the family does not have to pay the cost for her to live at home.

Others have no family, and they are truly alone. They are “widows indeed.” They have no one but the assembly to turn to. The assembly can provide food and shelter, and those who complain about it should explain why. A widow who is a “widow indeed” may not ask for help or seek support from anyone. However, within the assembly, there should be those who understand what must be done to ensure the widow is safe, secure, and their needs are met. Visiting widows in their suffering is never inappropriate, and it is helpful for all believers to know how to show some spiritual grace.

The finances of a local church need to be handled wisely. Some needs continue regularly, and some are quite quickly met when caring saints keep in touch with those in need. The widows and orphans need our help, and from our heavenly Father comes the bounty through His children on the first day of the week when we gather.
