2 Timothy 2:24

THE SERVANT OF THE LORD

THE SERVANT OF THE LORD. 2nd Timothy 2:24. Timothy was a teacher of spiritual truth, and Paul advised him not to waste his time or create confusion by engaging in arguments. Paul’s instructions reminded him that he was the Lord’s servant. As such, he needed to understand who he represented. The title “The Lord’s servant” reminded him of his position and responsibilities. The attitude of the Lord’s servant contrasts with that of the false teachers. Those who speak for the Lord are expected to be Christlike in their words and actions.

Subjects that are not based on the word of God but impact the stability and testimony of a congregation lead to conflict. Conflict only promotes ungodliness and is unproductive. God's foundation does not endorse foolish arguments or sparks quarrels among believers. Some people argue and debate just for fun. There is no benefit in engaging in that; it only opens the door to division and strife.

The servant of the Lord must avoid getting involved in those side issues driven by the world, the flesh, and the devil. Servants are responsible for teaching truth in a kind, gentle, patient, and courteous way. Listen to what people say and respond respectfully to their questions. When we stand for the faith, we should not be contentious or try to win arguments.

When we face challenges, we listen to what the person has to say and then take the necessary time to instruct them from God's word, hoping that God will lead them to repent of their wrongs and accept His truth. The bondservant follows the character and example of our Lord Jesus, who is "meek and lowly in heart." A kind, gentle person is approachable and should be easy to understand when they have something to say. There are times when opposition and rejection will come, but the Christ-like person will be patient, not aggressive. We are supposed to reflect the gentleness and meekness of our Lord, who always spoke the truth but with power and authority that was kept under control. Kindness, gentleness, and patience help make what a person has to say acceptable as well as understandable. Courtesy is never out of fashion, especially when dealing with those who are trying to condemn you or make you seem ignorant in front of others. Some people are unwilling to accept the truth of God even when it is clearly relevant to a person or situation. The truth of God’s word reveals sin and can make sinful individuals feel guilty and judged without any explanation. A calm, clear explanation of appropriate scripture passages given with quiet authority has a powerful impact on those listening and making important decisions.
