YOU KNOW. 2nd Timothy 3:10 In these last days we live in, some safeguards need to be put in place, just as Timothy needed. An example of godly leadership is one. Paul's life was for Timothy, just as the lives of those who went before us and taught us the ways of the Lord are for us. The lessons learned in a godly home when we were young do not disappear. The examples of parents and scriptures learned and applied are there for us to draw on whenever we need or want them. The unchanging, inspired word of God in the scriptures provides the wisdom we need to be saved, to tell others how to be saved, and to teach others. Paul's teaching and way of life contrasted those who had a form of godliness but denied the power of godliness.
The reality of a new spiritual life in Christ cannot be hidden. Timothy had seen what Paul was like, heard what he preached, and knew Paul practiced what he preached. He had been with Paul for years and understood what it means to follow Christ. He observed someone who obeyed the Lord through all kinds of difficulties and circumstances in life. He knew Paul’s character, personality, attitudes, beliefs, practices, and actions in both good times and bad.
Nine characteristics of Paul demonstrated that he was faithful to God as His servant and to those he preached to. He knew Him as a caring, compassionate, and concerned teacher of God's truth. We learn that these qualities should be present in every servant of the Lord, regardless of who they are or where they serve. Doctrine refers to the truth of God found in His Word. The manner of life means that a servant's lifestyle must align with his teachings. Living as a servant involves separating from sin in body, soul, and spirit and being committed to the Lord Jesus Christ. He was God’s perfect servant.
Faith in Christ and loyalty to Him will be clearly seen in an honest and reliable servant. Those who serve the Lord will not become impatient or irritable when facing trials and persecution. Their love for the Lord, love of God's word, and love for others will be evident. Even in the face of severe hardships, they will be recognized by their perseverance, strength, and endurance.
