Listening & Learning — A Devotional

2 Timothy 3:7

DELIBERATE IGNORANCE

DELIBERATE IGNORANCE. 2nd Timothy 3:7 Ineffective learning results from exploring strange ideas, religious speculation, and theories people hold, as well as from avoiding the proven teachings of God’s word. People who are ineffective in learning never speak with certainty because they often change their minds after reading different books or listening to persuasive speakers who start their opinions with, “I am learning that…” With today's heavy emphasis on education and the many conflicting opinions, the failure to “come to the knowledge of the truth” has become like an epidemic among those without faith in God.

For someone to have been taught the truth but not acknowledge it means their teachings need to be exposed and rejected. These false teachers often sneak up on people who are captivated by the unknown or dramatic claims others make. They often fail to understand the truth or its importance. Their minds seem to be corrupted and unclean. They cannot be trusted.

Sin inevitably catches up with us because truth will be uncovered sooner or later. Our hearts and minds cannot be concealed by deception forever. Even life's struggles, tensions, and stresses will reveal our true selves. There is a limit to how far a true child of God will go, and changes will happen when the light of truth finally shines on the soul. It is better to do this now rather than later. Character is constantly being built and cannot be hidden. The pursuit of personal identity and to “feel good about themselves” has eroded any foundational confidence in those who have honestly confronted their guilt before God, repented to Him, and placed personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior from sin and its eternal consequences. The desire for something new or different, and sensational ideas instead of truth, leaves people stranded on “the coast of the cast away.” Honest seekers and students look for genuine answers to sincere questions. Ignorance makes a person susceptible to false teachers and their opinions. Learning is essential, and seeking the truth is honorable. However, don't look any further once the truth is found, presented, and proven by millions of people over thousands of years. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father but by Me.” When a person comes to Christ by faith and believes God’s word, then they commit themselves to do what God says. To know the truth (Jesus) and to accept the truth (God’s word), then a person is in the place where they can be “sanctified by Thy truth, Thy word is truth.” “They shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.”
