Listening & Learning — A Devotional

2 Timothy 4:4

THEY TURN AWAY

THEY TURN AWAY. 2nd Timothy 4:4 People with “itching ears” seek preaching and teaching that avoids offending anyone, warning, correction, or making listeners uncomfortable. They equate Christian love with a vague feeling toward others that only brings comfort and casual living, ignoring the need to face the guilt and consequences of sin. It is unfamiliar to them that love values people so much that it confronts evildoers about their errors.

They will not tolerate viewpoints that don't align with their views, and they argue that the verbal inspiration of the scriptures is not the foundation of the Christian faith. Their understanding of what the Bible teaches is simply to love God and love others.

False teaching isn't limited to outside the so-called church. We must seek God and dedicate ourselves to only preaching His word to ensure what we say is true. Don't react too quickly when faced with challenges. Keep a clear mind and remain open to the guidance of God's Spirit. Stay alert to temptations to please others by conforming to their desires. Resist what we know is wrong and commit to doing what is right. Be vigilant when under pressure and fulfill our responsibility to uphold the truth. The desire for preaching that doesn’t offend anyone and is tolerant of whatever pleases most people causes people to follow myths, fables, and their teachers. Sadly, those fables have entered some churches that want large crowds and financial support. They want people to enjoy the time at “church” and then “give sacrificially.”
