2 Timothy 4:5

BUT YOU DO GOD’S WORK

BUT YOU DO GOD’S WORK. 2nd Timothy 4:5 Paul told Timothy to “be watchful,” “keep your head in all situations.” He was to maintain a balanced, calm, cool, and collected attitude when facing every difficult circumstance among God’s people. He was not to avoid “afflictions” or the ongoing hardship that comes with preaching the Gospel and ministering to the Lord’s people.

We must maintain clear minds when dealing with contentious people and stay morally and spiritually alert to the temptation to abandon the truth. It is essential to resist pressure to conform to the world and false teachings. Those who instruct others bear the heavy responsibility of remaining vigilant and prepared to defend the faith that was “once delivered to the saints.”

Timothy was tasked with this by the apostle Paul when he wrote this final epistle. We, too, need to stay clear-headed about all such false teachings. Doing so may bring some suffering and hardship because of our dedication to the truth. There will be some difficulty imposed because of our duty to spread the word of God without trying to make it popular to those who do not want God's truth to interfere with their way of life. Like Timothy's ministry, we need to preach, teach, rebuke, and correct when necessary, and train younger people. We must provide leadership and be equipped to carry the burdens of others. We should eagerly do the work of an evangelist, even though we have other responsibilities that we have been gifted to fulfill. While one may be a teacher, evangelism is the work of all God's saints. We must not leave undone what we are able to do. This is our duty to the people of our generation and the ones who follow.

When we are committed to teaching the truth, we must never be swayed by new ideas and philosophies that cannot withstand the scrutiny of divine truth revealed in the scriptures. We are to preach the word of God as evangelists; tell others the way of salvation, and when God saves them, teach them how to live for Him using God’s word. Show them what it means to be a disciple who learns from God and follows the Lord.

Timothy’s ministry would lead him to suffer for the sake of the Gospel so that others could be saved. He was to remain in sound doctrine, teach it, and warn against false teachings that lead to ungodliness. He was to “flee youthful lusts” by being cleansed by the word of God and dedicated to the Lord’s service. He was to avoid conflict by guiding others to understand the truth in a kind, firm, and godly way. He was to preach the Gospel as a good soldier of Jesus Christ and not hesitate to move forward in faith. Lost souls were in danger of the apostasy that was becoming a serious threat to the truth.

Let us stay alert, because others with hands out are teaching, seeking those with itching ears. They teach false doctrines and say what to do to earn salvation. Such teaching is foreign to everything you’ve learned from faithful men and God Himself. We all need to be challenged in our ministry, to stay at the work, and to prove to those who are led astray that the Gospel messages we preach have divine proof that can be known and seen. Honest seekers for salvation and faithful men will accept such truth as you proclaim as their own. By God’s grace, honorable, faithful leaders will continue doing God's will wholeheartedly.
