READY TO BE OFFERED. 2ND Timothy 4:6 When we face death, older people often take time to reflect on their lives and think about the legacy they will leave behind. This can be positive or negative depending on how we have used what God’s grace has provided. “Only one life, ’twill soon be passed; only what’s done for Christ will last.”
Paul's journey was nearly complete, and he resembled a ship being released from a dock to head to another port, or a horse unhitched from a plow to go to its safe place of food, rest, and shelter. To Paul, his life had been poured out in service to the Lord Jesus Christ, and the final act of sacrifice was about to be made; the drink offering was wine poured out on the ground or altar [Num.28:11-31]. His work was finished, and the final action (departure; loosing) was taken.
He was at peace and confident that he would soon see the Lord and present Him with the fruits of his labor. His words would have encouraged Timothy, just as they do us, that no matter how difficult life is or how long the battle lasts, “It will be worth it all, when we see Jesus.” “One glimpse of His dear face, all sorrows will erase. So gladly run the race, ‘till we see Him.”
