ORDER IN FAMILY LIFE. Colossians 3:18-4:1 The domestic life of God's people is one of the most effective ways to promote the Gospel. It is also one of the easiest ways to hinder it. The influence of a devoted Christian family living according to God's design significantly impacts society and the nation when families follow divine guidance within a God-ordained structure. Guidance for public life was provided in the previous verses; now, guidance for private life is shared. Faith in Christ transforms homes, but godly homes in an ungodly world face challenges both from within and outside. A home ordered by God, where each member obeys His commands regarding their role, serves as a powerful testimony. Conversely, if a Christian home ignores or resists these divine instructions, it is often seen by others as no better than homes without any fear of God. When roles and hierarchy are clearly established in a home, order replaces chaos.
There are principles of conduct to follow in families who do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus with thankfulness. The new life we have requires us to be aware of these principles and practice them in everyday life. The three relationships in this passage of scripture are based on cooperation and partnership between equals in personhood, but who have different roles to fill in a household. “In the Name of the Lord, and “In the Lord” introduces a new dynamic into everyday life that is both new and necessary in the Christian family.
Christian living is demonstrated in homes, workplaces, and gatherings as a way to fulfill God's will in relationships that reach into the community. The influence of Christ's peace, His word, and His name highlights the character and behavior of kingdom living.
The very act of bringing to the attention of the Colossian believers and leaders of assemblies issues that are usually private and hidden behind the walls of a home highlights the importance of the testimony and doctrine the assembly upholds. Christian families can either support or jeopardize God's people, and life at home influences all believers who gather in remembrance, worship, learning, and public preaching. Even our behavior toward those who work for us or those for whom we work can have a positive or negative impact on the reputation and name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Reciprocal attitudes among all family members in a home foster relationships built on respect and cooperation. Each person needs to value the roles and responsibilities of others and commit to fulfilling their own. The peace of Christ, His word, and His name influence our character inwardly, shaping the outward behavior of the Christian family. Domestic life grants dignity and worth to each individual when they recognize there is equality. When the roles of each person are understood and accepted as divinely given authority, harmony in family life is established and can be sustained.
