Colossians 4:1

Masters

Masters. Colossians 4:1. Are there people working for you whose efforts you value? Are the tasks you ask them to perform up to standard, or are they done correctly? Be fair when evaluating the work of those who serve you. They may not be as aware of how important their work is as you are, and they might not initially grasp the need to be as technically precise as you expect. Take the time to clearly communicate what you want and why it matters that they do their best. Make sure they understand your expectations and what you want to see as they work. Then, let them know they are appreciated for their hard work and how the project was completed.

Christian masters and employers must go beyond legal requirements and act justly and fairly toward those who work for them. Fairness and respect shown to workers will foster respect and diligence in return. Our Master in Heaven knows everything about us and our work, including what motivates us to keep going. Remembering our Lord Jesus as our Master is not just a motivation but also a model for masters to follow. When those who treat their slaves as partners in the Lord’s service, as sons and daughters of God, this elevates the duty to a higher level of commitment. Obedience then becomes a privilege, dignity, and a freedom to do what is right for the Lord’s sake. Spiritual equality places all believers on equal footing, and fair treatment by employers and faithful service by employees should become the norm.

We, too, are called to work for a Master who knows no deceit Himself but recognizes it in us. He understands the effort needed to complete a task, and He knows the passion we put into the work we are meant to do. If I take shortcuts and am careless in doing His work so I can focus on my own, He won't trust me with another. I will be left to my labor alone on things without lasting value or eternal rewards.

Whether I am a master or servant, I must always remember that there is a Master who observes everything I do, how I do it, and my motivation behind it. He assigns me tasks to advance His kingdom and bless His people. When I dedicate my effort, time, talents, and God-given abilities to work for Him, may it be my joy and privilege to serve Him with all my might. When my labors are finished, I believe we’ll both be pleased with what’s accomplished—something that brings blessing to others, glory and honor to God, and praise and thanksgiving to the Lord Jesus Christ.
