Colossians 4:2–18

THE PRACTICAL USE OF WORDS

THE PRACTICAL USE OF WORDS. Colossians 4:2-18 The first six verses of this chapter teach us how our internal attitudes and external actions involve the wise use of words. When we have the chance to share the Gospel, we are to confidently proclaim the message in ways and words that the Holy Spirit guides. We must use speech in ways that align with what the Bible teaches and that are understandable to those who listen. To do that, specific prayer is needed to guide our thoughts and expressions so they are appropriate for the listeners' age, culture, and situation.

Only God can empower His word when a preacher addresses the unsaved, who are spiritually dead. Opening doors for Gospel preaching is also something only God's power can provide, and our role is to earnestly pray for it to happen and for the servants God chooses to be willing to walk through the open door. Speaking with words of grace will be effective when the messenger demonstrates a graceful walk of faith. Believers must walk with practical wisdom before they speak purposeful words.

The theme of the book of Colossians is the supremacy of our Lord Jesus Christ in His deity, in creation, in His sustaining power over all things, in the church, in redemption, and in the Gospel. From every perspective, He is seen in His dignity and glory. As those who are connected with Him eternally by His grace, we have access to Him at all times through prayer, and He communicates with us through the word of God. The Holy Spirit gives understanding as He reveals Christ to us. Prayer does not need to be overanalyzed; it is simply to be practiced. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us, and our Lord Jesus knows what we ask for and need through His omnipotent and divine wisdom.
