John 17

THE LORD PRAYS FOR US

THE LORD PRAYS FOR US. John 17 John 16:33 summarizes everything the Lord Jesus Christ told the disciples the night before His crucifixion. His body would be laid in Joseph’s new tomb in less than twenty-four hours. This verse connected all the topics He had discussed when He told them to take courage. Despite everything that would happen, they would not be left alone or abandoned in their lives and the struggles ahead.

For us, victory has already been achieved; we can claim the peace of Christ even in the most difficult times. In John 17, we go far beyond a usual prayer meeting into the throne room of the Most High God and are permitted to hear the words of deity speaking to deity. This is sacred ground, and we approach it with reverence and godly fear. It’s a unique moment when we can hear our Lord's words as He prays for His own. This connects the glorifying of Christ with the faith and future of believers.

Seven things form the basis of His intercession for us: [1] “Thy Son.” [2] The glory of God. [3] His commission. [4] the objects of His intercession. [5] What He did here. [6] His glory in His own. [7] His finished work. His finished work is described as follows:

  • Christ accepted for us – the pledge of our glory
  • Christ dwelling in us – the hope of our glory
  • Christ walking with us – the light of glory
  • Christ on us – the garments of glory
  • Christ’s fullness – the measure of our glory
  • Christ Himself – our crown of glory
