The Disciples and His Cares. Luke 14:25-26 In the kingdom of God, there is an order of priorities that we need to have clear in our minds, which will guard us and keep us in a position and condition of soul to fulfill our commitment to Christ. When a relationship with another person is formed, we must maintain our commitment to that person to keep the relationship functional and satisfying for both. We are to honor our father and mother because of our natural human relationship with them for our lifetime. Trusting our eternal soul to our Lord Jesus and gratefully accepting His eternal life establishes a lasting relationship. Our love and commitment to Him will never cease throughout eternity. Our care for those we love in this life will pass, and even though we cherish the memories we have of them, they will fade and disappear. The Lord didn’t intend for us to kill our children or ourselves so we could be disciples. He meant for us not to let other people, or even our own desires, come between us and following Him.
This scripture passage indicates the possibility of failure on our part and for anyone who is not fully committed to our Lord Jesus Christ. Discipleship is not for the casual believer who “dabbles” in the Christian life and walks with the Lord when convenient. They want to follow Him when they can fit it into their “busy schedule.” We cannot allow the cares of this life to keep us from following our Lord.
