The Disciple and his Cross. Luke 14:27 Even though people have crafted crosses of gold and silver to wear on their clothing or around their necks, or constructed large crosses of wood, metal, or stone to display on buildings—which seem to serve the man-made purpose of showing respect for the Lord Jesus—the fact remains that a cross is something to die on. Anyone carrying a cross in Jesus’ day was on a one-way trip out of town, and they, along with everyone else, knew they were not coming back. To bear our cross today signifies our loyalty to the Lord, and our priority is to respond to His commands. Practically, this means we are willing to live or die daily for Him. Everything we are and have is rightfully His, whether it is our money, time, heart, or life—He knows all we claim for ourselves. It costs nothing to come to the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved, but everything to follow the Lord and serve Him as a true disciple.
