The Disciple and his Costs

The Disciple and his Costs. Luke 14:28-30 The Lord Jesus Himself is the one who faced the great cost of doing His Father’s will and accomplishing the work to which He was completely and perfectly committed. He was like the man He referred to in the illustration of one who intended to build a tower. Before the Lord came to earth, He knew what it would cost Him to finish the work needed to save us from our sins. He knew He would be the “Lamb as it was slain from before the foundation of the world.” The cost of redemption didn’t catch our Lord Jesus Christ by surprise.

As those who follow Him, we may not know ahead of time what the costs of discipleship will be for us, but we trust that our Lord knows and will direct us. Therefore, we leave our worries about the cost to Him and focus on what He intends us to do. The Lord knew that a battle lay before Him, and He was prepared to die for our sins and pay that supreme cost. We might initially be enthusiastic in our service to the Lord, but when our interests compete with loyalty to Him, we begin to count the cost. No cross, no discipleship. No costs, no discipleship. The Lord warned all who were to serve and follow Him to understand what is involved in following Him and to count the cost.
