Listening & Learning — A Devotional

Titus 1:11

SUBVERSION

SUBVERSION. Titus 1:11 Entire households of believers are being led astray from the faith by unruly and vain talkers. Those who “subvert whole households” focus on themselves and try to get listeners to weaken or compromise their faith. Their teachings do not emphasize the inspiration of the scriptures by the Holy Spirit or the divine nature of the Lord Jesus Christ. Instead, they advise people to decide for themselves whether something is true, relying on human judgment or personal preference rather than prayer and biblical guidance.

Almost without exception, there is an appeal for money to “support this ministry.” Dishonest gain is a primary motivation for those driven by greed. Such practices among well-known “evangelists” and “teachers” have dishonored the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, leading many skeptics to reject the Gospel message.

To “subvert” means to overthrow what has already been established, exists, and has been tried and proven by the transformed lives of those who have heard and believed the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Those who subvert entire households cause their downfall, ruin, and destruction through their harmful teachings. They undermine the established doctrines and principles of God's Word and the proven results of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ. The false opinions of men have subverted the unchanging truth.

Those committed to spreading the Gospel of Christ, which is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, must stay faithful to the Lord and adhere to the practices and principles of the Bible. Spiritual discernment and vigilance are vital qualities for those who lead God's people.

Subversive individuals must be silenced; furthermore, their "mouths must be stopped." When applying the word of God to this situation and understanding how God intends for these individuals to be addressed, they must be silenced. Not only should those who are false be silenced, but the entire congregation must also understand what God's word says and why this step is necessary to correct the wrong. The work of false teachers is such that they undermine not just one or two people but entire households. Families are led astray when even one member pays attention to the propagated false teaching. In a family, discord is often caused by one member who tends to distract those who have genuinely served God in the assembly.
