GOOD FIDELITY. Titus 2:9-10 In the Bible, certain events and institutions happen that are not necessarily approved but are accepted as historical facts that occurred in a sinful society of sinful people. For example, God’s will is that one man should be married to one woman for life, but polygamy and divorce happen, as well as premarital sex. God condemns adultery, fornication, covetousness, and much of what people do today without recognizing the seriousness of their sins. God knows it happens, and He is willing to forgive those who repent, admit their guilt before Him, and accept the forgiveness He offers to those who trust in Christ. Slavery exists, but God does not require its overthrow by force. Instead, the abuses associated with slavery are addressed when a master accepts the Gospel message. When a slave received the Savior, he was transformed by God's grace into an obedient servant.
The principles taught in the scriptures regarding slaves, indentured servants, and those who pay off their debts with their labor correspond to today's employers, employees, and their work. Like Christian slaves in Crete, we should fulfill our duties and meet expectations by doing our best work and remaining trustworthy regardless of the circumstances or place where we labor.
Joseph performed his work as a slave in Egypt in an exemplary manner. In Potiphar’s house, he remained faithful to his master despite being tempted every day. In prison, where bitterness and hopelessness often ruled, he did everything expected of him and more, despite the tough conditions. In Pharaoh’s palace, even though he was second in command, he was still a servant to an ungodly king, in a place where pride and its evil could take hold at any moment.
Submission to authority essentially means submission to God. Resisting the temptation to take something home from work that we know will likely never be missed is a way of yielding to the Lord and demonstrating good faithfulness. Being honest in everything we do testifies to the righteousness of Christ that has been credited to us. Patient endurance, faithful service, doing God's will from the heart, not talking back to those in authority over us, and being completely trustworthy all "adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.”
The attitude and actions of Christian employees set a standard in the workplace that uniquely and powerfully testifies to the Gospel. There will be pressures to conform to the behaviors of other employees, and unrighteous demands from greedy employers who may expect you to lie to protect them. They might want you to manipulate the truth to gain financially. The cost of “living godly' at work cannot be avoided, but a child of God can live with confidence and faith in the goodness and grace of their heavenly Father, their Master, and Lord.
