POSITIVE TRAITS. Titus 2:8 Verses 8 and 9 list positive qualities for those who are overseers (bishops) of God’s people. As a steward, he should be welcoming and happy to see people come to his home so he can share fellowship with them. He loves doing good for others and is discreet and balanced in his opinions and decisions. He is fair in his actions and in the standards he sets. He is gracious and stays true to his devotion to God, maintaining self-control even when under pressure. When he teaches God's word, his teaching can be trusted to be scriptural. He is capable of both teaching and correcting wrongs. Those who serve as stewards of the Lord in the churches carry a great responsibility, but it is also one of the most rewarding privileges a person can have in life.
The benefits of hospitality to those who dine or stay with us are especially valuable for young people, those in need, travelers, servers, and providers of hospitality. Demonstrating hospitality is a way we can support those who are alone or suffering in some way. Self-centeredness is common in society today. Christian leaders can show their concern for others by practicing kindness, courtesy, and generosity in their hospitality. All believers can show their interest in the eternal salvation of those who are not yet saved by grace through friendly hospitality and can also encourage those who are already part of God’s family. Those who love what is good are people of discernment. They appreciate good speech, teaching, activities, Gospel preaching, and good people. Avoiding questionable things and activities is an excellent way to guard against sin. “If it's doubtful, it's dirty” is an old saying that holds a lot of truth. When we recognize something is wrong, a leader must distance themselves from it rather than support it. If it falls within their responsibility, they should openly condemn, rebuke, and reject it. A person who is sober-minded has self-control; they are the master of their thoughts, words, and actions. With seriousness and discretion, he knows how to express himself in wise and prudent ways. He understands that what he says and does carries weight and influence over many people. His decision-making is fair, impartial, and just, and his relationship with God is characterized by holiness, respect, and reverence. He recognizes the importance of self-control and personal discipline as he fulfills his responsibilities as a steward. An upright and devout leader understands the importance of maintaining a personal and positive outlook on the things of God, which influences others positively. When he controls himself and is self-disciplined, it encourages cooperation from those he leads. Living according to God’s principles sets a strong example for those who follow the Lord.
