THE POWER OF THE GOSPEL

Acts 2:37-47. THE POWER OF THE GOSPEL “The Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” Mark 16:20 There was… Deep conviction, v.37. “Cut to the heart…” Pricked in their heart – their consciences were awakened by the message of the Gospel They had crucified Christ and had pierced His hands and His feet with nails, and a spear pierced His side Open confession, v.37. “What shall we do?” Awakened by God but unable to do anything to save themselves Open confession brings the light of the Gospel to darkened minds Plain directions, v.38-40. “Repent… be baptized… receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Repentance is a complete change of mind regarding themselves and Jesus Christ, who they had rejected Baptized implied the renunciation of the old life and an open confession of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord The Holy Spirit enters as the promise to them of new life and power of the Gospel, v.39 Joyful reception, v.41. “Gladly received his word…” Remission of sins. “Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission.” Repentance first, then remission of sins and reception of the Savior The offer of mercy and grace was gladly received Steady progression, v.42. “Continued steadfastly…” God gave them life and made them new by inward transformation There was love for the word of God: “the apostle’s doctrine.” There was love for one another: “fellowship.” There was love for the Lord: “breaking of bread” There was love for prayer: “and in prayers.” They were grafted into Christ; possessed by the Spirit; grew in grace and the knowledge of God Hearty cooperation, v.44-45. “They were together and had all things in common.” Warm affection for one another Mutual interest in one another Practical support for one another Great jubilation, v.46-47. “Gladness of heart… praising God.” Repentance brings us to the narrow gate We enter through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ We are on the road to our heavenly Father’s house Any sadness on the way is temporary because joy comes in the morning

The Gospel is the power of God that… Pierces with conviction Compels confession of need Brings the joy of forgiveness to those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ Brings fellowship when we are obedient to the Lord Brings delight when we deny self Fills our hearts with joy and praise to God Makes our lives to be a testimony to the Lord
