Laws regarding Retaliation. Exodus 21:22-36 Injuries that occurred, whether intentionally caused or accidental, were defined by God so that proper and fair compensation could be given for the time lost or the harm done. Serious injuries were addressed with seriousness. If no serious injuries happened during an event, fines were imposed. These laws were reasonable, ensuring that punishments matched the severity of the crime. These guidelines were provided so that judges had clear rules known to all people, and offenders could expect just retribution. For discipline to be effective on both the offender and observers, it must be proportional to the offense. A punishment that is too harsh is unfair, and one that is too lenient does not teach proper behavior. Laws must be enforced to maintain order in society and to protect people's lives and property. The principle of “eye for an eye” was a rule for judges to follow when making decisions that safeguard society's well-being and safety.
God's grace has been given to us, reminding us that we have been saved from the eternal consequences of our sins by Christ's sacrifice. Our freedom is not because God ignored or overlooked sin but because He provided the Perfect Substitute for us. God set the standard in the past that maintains order today when it is followed. Laws serve their purpose when obeyed. When laws are changed or compromised to fit current desires, there is no longer a standard for right living. Without penalties for breaking laws, the law loses its value.
